What is the ergonomic analysis of the work station?
|
An ergonomic analysis of the work station consists
of gathering a series of observations in order to better understand the
work done and to propose changes and improvements which will improve the
working conditions. These recommendations will allow management to avoid
health problems in the workforce while maintaining production.
The ergonomist may simply advise the company on the measures to be taken
or he may orchestrate their implementation. Although no one ergonomic
procedure is the same as another, there are nonetheless guidelines which
can be outlined.
The process begins with an examination of the overall situation called
targeting, which will determine the type of work station to be analysed.
This begins with the examination the records concerning accidents and work
related illness, a compilation of complaints and analysis of interviews
with workers and supervisors which will usually allow the problem station
to be identified. A risk factor analysis of this station is then
done using a sampling of typical situations which may arise.
After having made an ergonomic diagnosis, having determined the
most serious risks, we try to determine the conditions which can explain
them. These are called determinants. Once we know why the risks exist we
have to find the way to eliminate them, by checking the modifications
and testing results. This is then presented to management who must authorize
implementation.
The employees must then be properly trained and closely supervised in order
to make any changes which may become necessary and to ensure that the employees
do not fall back into their old habits.

How can ergonomic analysis of the work station help?
|
We believe that it is not enough to simply have or purchase ergonomic
equipment and hope to adequately set up a work station. Needs must be well
identified, the equipment must be well chosen and properly used. It is
only then that ergonomics become effective!
Since ergonomics attempt to adapt the work environment to the limits
and capacities of the worker, its impact should be increased worker productivity
and satisfaction while at the same time reducing any risk to his health.
Ergonomic analysis of the work station implies both the correction of
existing situations (health or safety problems, reliability problems, production
problems) and the development of new work stations or new work systems.
An ergonomists expertise may, for example, help in the introduction
of a new product, or in identifying a problem in product quality or to
insure that any new labour laws are observed. The ergonomist will instigate
specific training programs which will allow workers to adopt new working
methods and to reject out dated or improper methods which may have been
acquired over time. It is through what is referred to as posture training
that long term changes in work habits are corrected.

Who can take advantage of this?
|
An analysis of accident records, work related illnesses and complaints,
coupled with a study of absenteeism, will quickly point out the employees
who would most benefit from an ergonomic evaluation of their work stations.
However, although it is perhaps wise to target those most effected, prevention
amongst the other workers must not be neglected. Any employee who is concerned
about his health would benefit from having his work station analysed and
any employer can improve the productivity of such an employee. A win -
win situation!

When should it be done?
|
There is no real ideal moment for instigating an ergonomic program.
The sooner the better. Every work related injury is one too many! However,
the ergonomic process must begin with a consensus reached between management,
union representatives and company employees. Without a common desire to
prevent and eliminate a problem, analysis of the work station cannot be
undertaken. The ergonomic approach requires an intense team effort. Everyone
has to participate.

We work with experienced ergonomists of different backgrounds (engineering,
medicine, ergo therapy, psychology...) all of whom have a minimum of postgraduate
university studies in ergonomics. As members in good standing of the Association
of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE), each has their own expertise in their
